Is Hormone Therapy Good for Patients with Nephrotic Syndrome

• Nowadays, Nephrotic Syndrome is mainly treated by hormone therapy. However, is this therapy really good for patients with Nephrotic Syndrome?

  Just as every coin has two sides, hormone therapy also has its own advantage and disadvantage. In regard to the advantage of this therapy, it is found that by the use of hormone, the symptoms of Nephrotic Syndrome can be remitted or eliminated in a short time, thus reliving the patients' pain. However, with the use of hormone, we also find that this therapy has many disadvantages, and the most important one is that it can just treat Nephrotic Syndrome symptomatically(it means hormone is only aimed at treating the symptoms). And that is why this disease is easy to relapse. Apart from the most significant disadvantage, we should note that it can also cause many untoward effects which are bad for patients. And the following are some commonly seen ones:

  1. By a long-term use of hormone, patients with Nephrotic Syndrome may suffer from infections or their original infections will be aggravated. This case is more common in patients whose condition is serious or whose body condition is poor. The reason is that as the patients' body resistance is weak, and hormone can restrain our body defense function, bacteria infections, fungus infections and virus infections are easy to occur. Therefore, when patients with Nephrotic Syndrome have to use hormone for a long time, they should prevent infections actively.

  2. In patients with Nephrotic Syndrome, the use of hormone can cause the disorders of water and electrolyte. In the early stage of the treatment, when hormone have not come into play in promoting urination, it will cause water and sodium retention, thus aggravating the edema. In addition, hormone can increase the discharge of calcium and phosphorus, and decrease the absorption of calcium. And as a result, a long-term use of large doses of hormone can cause osteoporosis, spontaneous fracture and aseptic necrosis of femoral head.

  3. For patients with Nephrotic Syndrome, hormone can cause complications of the digestive system, showing aggravating the peptic ulcer disease, or even inducing bleeding and perforation.

  4. Neuropsychiatric symptoms

  Hormone can cause insomnia, make the patients emotional, or induce mental disorder in individual cases.

  5. In children with Nephrotic Syndrome who have used hormone for a long time, hormone can restrain the growth and development of the children.

  6. Hormone can also cause central obesity, moon face, acne, fatigue, Hypertension and Diabetes.

  7. In addition, if patients with Nephrotic Syndrome use hormone for a long time, it can induce cataract, glaucoma, thrombosis, menstrual disorder and other diseases or symptoms.

  From the above side effects of hormone, we can know that hormone therapy is really not the best option for patients with Nephrotic Syndrome.
